AUDITIONS
Q: When are the auditions for the NSU Modern 2011-2012 team?
A: NSU Modern Audition Workshop is on Tuesday, Oct. 11th @ 8:00pm (Lot 4). Final Audition is Wednesday, Oct. 12th @ 8:30pm (Lot 4). Final team rosters will be posted via website (www.nsumodern.org) and Facebook (www.facebook.com/NSUmodern) Thursday of Week 3. Newly admitted members are expected to attend a team welcome event Friday night (week 3) and an all-team mixer between ACA Hip Hop, Samahang Modern, and Icarus Contemporary Dance Company on Saturday (week 3) from 12-2PM.
Q: Do you need to be a UCLA student to audition for NSU Modern?
A: Yes. You must be a current UCLA student or alumni to audition.
Q: Does it cost money to tryout for NSU Modern?
A: No. Audition and workshops are absolutely free!
Q: Who are the choreographers for the audition workshop?
A: Tuesday, Oct. 11th- Richard Ngo, Karen Chuang, and Destiny Fortier
Q: Do I have to choreograph for the audition?
A: No. However, a unique, individual freestyle in between the choreographed audition pieces will help set you apart from other dancers.
Q: Is dance experience mandatory?
A: Although previous dance experience can be beneficial, many previous members have joined NSU Modern with little or no dance experience. For some, NSU Modern is their first dance team. Whether or not you have dance experience, we highly encourage you to come out and audition!
Q: What style of dance is NSU Modern associated with?
A: NSU Modern is a competitive hip hop dance team. However, the team is continuously influenced from its members whose dance backgrounds range from contemporary and ballet to breakdancing and popping and even gymnastics!
Q: Who judges the auditions?
A: The auditions will be judged by NSU Modern’s new executive board for the 2011-2012 season.

Q: When does NSU Modern rehearse?
A: NSU Modern Rehearsals are every Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7:00pm. Additional practices before major performances or competitions will be announced ahead of time.
Q: Are there any additional expenses I should be aware of?
A: To be a member of NSU Modern, you must be a member of the Nikkei Student Union (NSU) Club, UCLA’s only Japanese American student association. Membership fee is $15. NSU Modern also participates in several competitions throughout the year. Competition fees are typically $20 per person, per competition.
Q: What competitions does NSU Modern enter during the season?
A: NSU Modern is tentatively scheduled to compete at The Bridge, Vibe, Fusion, Ultimate Brawl and Battle Royale dance competitions. NSU Modern also participates in many on-campus performances during the year. Past performances include Beat ‘SC Rally, Hill’s Best Dance Crew, Dance Marathon and Spring Sing.
Q: Do you have to have a certain GPA to maintain your status on NSU Modern?
A: We as fellow students believe that school comes first, but NSU Modern does not require you to maintain a certain GPA. Our philosophy as student-dancers is that you take full responsibility of your own actions and decisions.
